A British girl who was fined nearly $200 for opening a lemonade stand outside a festival in London received dozens of job offers after her story gained international attention, her family said.
The 5-year-old girl "burst into tears" when she was fined $195 for setting up a lemonade stand outside the Lovebox Festival in East London, Andre Spicer, a professor at City University London, told The Telegraph on Thursday.

"My daughter stood proudly in front of the table. 'Who wants lemonade,' she called out. Within a minute, she had her first customer," Spicer wrote in an article.

Spicer said four local council enforcement officers approached his daughter's stand and read a "lengthy legal statement" saying the girl was being fined for not having the proper trading permit. He claimed the officer said the fine would be reduced if "it's paid quickly."
"After five minutes, the officers' jobs were done and they went on their way. We packed up and made the short walk home. My daughter sobbed all the way," he recalled.
Since telling his daughter's story, the family has received support from people worldwide and job offers -- including London's famed Borough Market.

"Dozens of festivals, markets and businesses have offered us an opportunity to set up a lemonade stand," Spicer wrote in a tweet on Saturday. "We hope they will extend this invitation to others who'd love to make a stand."
In response, Borough Market tweeted to the father: "In all seriousness, would your daughter like to sell some lemonade at Borough Market? We'd love to make that happen for her."

Tower Hamlets Council, who issued the ticket, apologized for the incident and has since revoked the fine, according to the BBC.
"We are very sorry that this has happened. We expect our enforcement officers to show common sense and to use their powers sensibly," a council spokesman said.
I find it telling that the fine would be reduced if it was "paid quickly." Sounds to me like "mob protection" money.

When I was A kid my young friends and I sold in front of our house to the older kids who got out of school latter than us.. We even sold tickets to our puppet shows. We made the puppets. WE made Halloween scare houses in the basement and sold tickets there also.We even sold the neighbors shiny rocks he put out for landscaping. It was great fun and our weekly allowance was only 5 cents. The dime store down the street got a lot of our business. Now the adults in power are making it hard for kids to just be kids. How sad.
Anybody selling stuff outside the festival needs a permit. Why should this family be any different? Her parents put her up to this so they should pay the fine. It is not like she set up shop on the sidewalk in front of her house. Her parents took her to the festival so she could make money selling stuff. Fine, then obey the law as others are expected to do.

Entrepreneurism is something that can not be taught, as obviously displayed by the council members, just bureaucrats that only know how to take from those that have it, to give to those that don't.
The police should have showed up in great numbers and each paid for a glass or 2. That would have been a better response.
Entrepreneur a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.
I commend this little girl who is a lot better than these immigrants that are always on the take in America.
That's incredibly unfair. I've worked with and for immigrants who cherish the opportunities they find in America, and who've worked hard to become successful entrepreneurs.
And unfortunately, i have seen many more that are on welfare and housing assistance but not willing to work. Go to CA and you will be shocked. And yes some have done wonderful things with their lives, precious few.

The officers did the right thing. There is a time and a place for a lemonade stand, a neighborhood, etc where there is no competition and people need something to drink. At a festival, really? Oh I completely agree. But realistically, the fine is for the parent because ultimately they are I'm charge of all the child's action under a certain age. The fine was a bit excessive but the child had no business selling lemonade there.

Oh I completely understand your point. I just look at it like despite us thinking that it doesn't really matter its just lemonade. This is pry a slight exaggeration, but these small business owners rely on profits from lemonade and such to pay their family bills. By the looks of the picture, she was selling it for 25 cents which completely undercuts their profit based on their much larger overhead which also includes taxes.
